Bean bag chairs were once all the rage. Used for casual seating, they are easy to move, comfortable to be seated on and matched just about any color scheme. The only real negative was once they sprung a leak there were beans everywhere.
As a kid, I played with a cornhole bean bag. It was my favorite toy. I threw it at almost anything I could take aim at. At the beach when the other kids were using their pails to build sand castles, I was using mine for target practice. At home, I threw it in my breakfast cereal just to see the milk splash all over the breakfast table. At night, I threw it at my older sister when I thought it was time for her to get up and make me a snack. I threw it at mom to get her attention. I threw it at my dog and he would play fetch with it. The last time I remembered seeing the bean bag, it was tattered and torn. It had been mended several times to stop the bean loss. I think mom threw it in the trash because she knew I would not. She also thought it was time for me to start respecting her, and she was right.
I tried to make a bean toss bag one time. I took one of dad’s socks and filled it with uncooked pea beans. I remember getting out mom’s sewing basket and very carefully sewing up the open end of the sock. It took a long time to sew because I had not figured out the value of the thimble yet. I may have actually used a darning needle with a light weight thread. My first toss of the homemade bean bag was also my last. The end of the sock came apart in mid toss, and we had beans, beans and more beans all over the dining room. That was also the day I learned to use the vacuum cleaner.
