Wool area rugs can add a splash of color, warmth and accent to the rooms they adorn.  Hardwood or laminate floors can feel cold and hard on bare feet compared to the warm, soft texture of wool area rugs.

Wool has many properties that make it a great choice for producing quality area rugs.  First, it is a renewable resource.  Synthetic fibers are not.  Wool fiber is also recyclable and can biodegrade.  Synthetic fibers do not.  In addition to the eco-friendly nature of wool, wool is a non-allergenic fiber.  It is fire retardant as well, since the fibers are self extinguishing.  This is a major reason why wool fiber area rugs are so popular.

The pricing, availability, and quality of wool or subject to a wide range of factors and if you have specific tastes a little research might be in order.  Highly sought after wools might be imported from countries like New Zealand or India.  Tibetan wool is also highly sought after.  The age and gender of the sheep, the method by which it was sheared and how the wool is cared for and treated all have an effect on the value of the wool.  Kork wool, for instance, is wool that is sheared from the shoulders and flanks of lambs.  It is very expensive and of the highest quality.

Persian rugs are talked about often.  Persian has become somewhat of catchall word for any rug produced in Middle eastern countries, similar to how the brand name Kleenex has become synonymous with the word tissue.  A genuine Persian rug is produced in Iran.  This is not to say that you will not find a quality wool rug that was produced from China, India, Tibet or here in the United States.
