Wall clocks today are very popular with home decorators, and antique wall clocks on high on their lists of accents to get. For those new to antique collecting and specifically to antique clocks, here are a few tips to help you along your journey.

Wall ClocksThe most important thing first of all is to know your clock history. You can find most of your information from bookstores or your local library and a lot of information on clocks can be found right here online. Manufacturers know that antique wall clocks are very popular these days and are manufacturing clocks that look very similar but are a fraction of the cost. So it behooves you to know how to spot a fake by reading about the inventors and the intricacies of their work.

Antiques are much more valuable if the clock is actually working. Obviously because these clocks were made so long ago, parts may be very rare and simply not available, so some of them may never work again. If you have experience with clocks it may be possible for you to replicate some of the important parts, but you will have to know the history of clock and how it works.

When shopping for an antique clock, it is helpful to follow experienced collectors around. No, I don’t mean to stalk them. Start up a friendly conversation and ask them if you could join them on an ‘excursion’ to a store or antique museum. If you’re new to this you probably don’t know anyone involved in collecting, so your best bet is to find someone at an antique fair and just strike up a conversation with someone. It’s fairly easy to find someone because your interests will be similar.

If you’ve done your homework and studied up on the history of clocks, it should be fairly easy for you to have an intelligent conversation with someone and pick up many tips as well.
