In this article, I will discuss where one can find comb binding machines and refill combs, approximate cost of the machines, and a brief overview of how to use the machine. Comb binding machines are simple machines that can be used to punch holes in papers and use plastic binding combs to bind them and turn them into professional looking books or handouts.

Comb binding machines can be purchased at many office supply stores and the cost of the simplest binding machine starts at approximately $60. Larger machines can cost well over $200. Refill combs can also be purchased at most office supply stores; usually 100 of them can be bought for approximately $10 to $20, depending on the size of combs that one needs.

A comb binding machine uses different sizes of plastic combs to bind papers. There are several different sizes of combs; what size one needs will depend on how many pages one will be binding. The smallest combs will usually bind up to about 25 pages while larger combs can be used to bind over 500 page documents.

To use the binding machine, it is best to read the instructions that came with the machine. If for some reason the instructions are not available, the machines are fairly simple to use. Pick up the stack of papers that you want bound. How many you bind at one time will depend on the size and capacity of your machine. Stack the papers neatly and lay them flat on the machine and line them up under the hole-punch area. Pull the lever and punch the holes in the stack of papers. Next, take the comb that you will be using to bind the papers; again the size of comb depends on how many pages are being bound. Insert the comb into the area on top of the machine that opens the combs. Gently pull the lever and open the comb. Stack the papers on the comb and gently push the lever back until the comb closes. Your document should now be neatly bound and ready to use!
