The termite is a eusocial insect, meaning it is a insect that lives in social nests called colonies. Similar to bees, and wasps in this aspect, termites rely on each other for their nest to thrive. The typical termite colony is made of workers, soldiers, and drones, and queens which are of either gender and for the purpose of reproducing.

Termites are essential in nature, because they eat decomposing plant materials, dung, which creates compost, and aids in the circle of production of the lifecycle. However these insects are also a pest in that sometimes they attack buildings causing thousands of dollars worth of damage to edifices each year. Ten percent of an estimated 4,000 different types of termites are known to eat through wood of homes, and business. That number is approximately 2,600.

There are several different ways to handle a termite attack on your property. The first being that when you have a building built, have it termite certified by a local pest control official. This is easy enough as a call, and usually doesn’t cost that much for an initial termite inspection.

If you have already bought some property, there are do it yourself termite control methods, which involve soil treatments. Many of these things are the same types of things a pest control official may do themselves.

First of all to prevent an attack by termites you should equip yourself with termeticides, or pesticides and treat your home with them. Secondly there are subterreanean treatments, which involve digging holes in areas around your home and using termite stakes. Dig a hole approximately six inches in depth, taking care to watch for utililty lines, and gas lines. Also try to dig these holes about one to three feet away from the foundation of your home, or building. Next, place termite baitors within the holes, these will capture the termites, thus keeping them from attacking the precious wood of your property. After placing the baitors, makes sure you graph where you have each one, or place flags atop them in the ground. This will aid in your endeavor to find the baitors months later, which may be harder than you think. The last thing anyone wants to do is spend hours digging  holes in their yard, only to come up empty handed.

After having done this, you have done two very powerful preventative measures to avoid disaster to your investment. Checking up on your baitors, and apply insecticides once every six months is recommended for the best results. See spending hundreds of dollars on pest control, truly is not needed.
