What ordinary object do we use every day sometimes even several times a day? Well you probably thought about the door knob because you read the title of this article, otherwise you could have said anything. The fact is that all of us use a door knob several times a day and most of the time we do not pay any attention to it.
There is a big cultural difference in the way people see door knobs. For example in Germany to open a door you have a handle, you can use it by pushing down with the hand or if you hands are full with you elbow even your forehead. Okay this is not the best way to open a door, but it is possible. On the other hand look at the French or Americans they use round door knobs more frequently than handles.
Door knobs are delicate porcelain, or metal, or glass even sometimes you will find crystal door knobs, but they are a little deceptive. First impression is that by it shape, (nice, round, smooth,) it charms the hand, although many men will tell you that for a larger hand most door knobs are too small. You must have at least one free hand to open a door with a round door knob, as making it turn will require the use of at least two fingers (if you count the thumb as a finger).
So you would think that I am totally opposed to those round objects that make opening doors more difficult, when a simple handle would resolve the problems. I have a confession to make. I have replaced all the handles in my home with door knobs, gorgeous, impractical, elegant, crystal door knobs. When the change was complete I felt like when I wear a plain dress and I add a magnificent piece of jewelry, the whole look was uplifted.
My advice to you, if your doors are practical but leave you cold esthetically change the door knobs and give your entire room a whole new look.
