It is surprising that there are not more female hair restoration products on the market considering that 40% of the cases of hair loss are in women. Part of the problem has been that for years women did not want to bring attention to themselves as having thinning hair problems. It was socially unacceptable for women to talk about those things in public so it was not brought up. Consequently, for years, the only option for dealing with hair loss has been to buy a wig or wear a hat. Neither of these are good solutions today as women are on the slopes, on the water, and in the mountains.
Finding female hair restoration products has not been easy but there are a few available. The US Food and Drug Administration has recently approved the drug Minoxidil as a treatment for female balding and hair thinning problems. This drug has been used by men for several years at a 5% solution strength but women can also use it but at a 2% strength. It should be noted that several women over the years have used their husband’s 5% solution with no known problems but the FDA only recommends 2%.
Minoxidil was originally slated to be a high blood pressure medication. During human trials it was noticed that subjects with male pattern baldness, androgenic alopecia, saw an improvement in their hair loss when taking the drug. Many men actually saw some re-growth. The drug works for high blood pressure by increasing the cross section of the tiny blood vessels known as capillaries. This causes less back pressure against the heart pumping and the overall blood pressure reading goes down as a consequence. It appears as though this is one of the effective hair loss remedies because this action also increases blood flow to the hair follicles which allows the hair to stay healthy and continue to produce keratin the hair shaft material.
Losing one’s hair is never a good thing and can be quite concerning but at least now women have a hair restoration product which can help them in their battle against the bald spot.
