When it comes to golf holidays Portugal is becoming the defacto golf destination for a great many Europeans thanks to its great courses & weather. This post brings together the key courses and areas to play in the Algarve – Portugal’s most popular golfing region.
For a fault-free golf holiday Algarve, on the Portuguese south coast, hosts the biggest selection of courses to choose from in the country, from the exclusive courses in the east, the huge choice of resorts and golf club in the central area and the excellent links courses out west.
The eastern Algarve has a relatively mild climate making it a comfortable location to play in Summer and Winter. The locals will tell you the best courses to play are the Quinta Do Vale (one of only a few Balasteros designed courses) or the challenging Quinta De Cima.
In truth though, the gem of the region is the Monte Rei. Designed by Jack Nicklaus the course is 18 challenging holes designed with fairway traps and bunkers that invariably come into play on every hole. The views of the surrounding countryside are fantastic especially off high tee boxes.
The character of courses in the western Algarve is dictated more so by the prevailing Atlantic breezes. You could almost play the Penina, O’Connor and Faldo courses alone for a week and they would constantly change with the wind.
The Oceanico O’Connor parkland course has a great variety of water/streams obstacles to bisect fairways while the adjoining Faldo course sports a desert-style design with undulating fairways sending tee-shots towards the rough/dunes throughout.
Finally central Algarve is dominated by several Oceanico resorts (over 12 in fact) with the Millenium and Old Course being the two best courses for eclectic course design and fine landscaping. But given that the area also has other fine course like Pinheiros Altos, Vila Sol, Quinta Do Lago and the Vale Do Lobo (host to the Portuguese Open on several occasions) means that the main dilemma is how many courses you can get to play in a single day.
