I have a couple of dogs one of which is a poodle and the others are great danes. Needless to say that I have a hard time keeping the floor clean. The poodle can’t really hold it for very long and the great danes, well when they have a problem, you don’t really want to know.
My dogs are of the spoiled variety and I would not ever consider leaving them outside while I am gone, so my options are limited. They can stay inside or they can stay inside. Either way if I am gone for awhile chances are very high that I will have something to clean up when I get home. This drives me nuts and until they come out with an actual vapoorize product I fear that it may continue.
The only real solution aside from timing food and water intake which is not always practical is a dog mat. This may strike some of you as gross but I find it to be the lesser of the evils and when options are limited we are left to make tough decisions. I would rather have a mat I can take outside and hose off as opposed to a floor I have to shovel and mop, remember we are talking great danes here.
Dog mats normally come in different sizes and have some type of fake astroturf like grass on top, that is permeable and allows the urine to run through. Below there is a mat that holds a fairly sizable amount of water. Again these mats come in all different sizes. The poodle mat would not work for the great danes.
Until I can teach the dogs to use the toilet the doggie mat is about the only option. It makes life easier for everyone and removes the stress from coming home and knowing there will be a problem. Having a well trained dog is partly a function of how well you set your home up to be dog proof and how often you are able to praise and punish your dog. If your home is not dog friendly and you are constantly punishing your dog is it really the dogs fault?
Getting the danes trained to use the mat was a bit of a challenge but once they understand what it is for they usually follow through.
