Hand Quilting Thread

Handcrafts like quilting, knitting and sewing have always been very popular with arts and craft enthusiast for years and they have special needles, threads and frames that they use to create their memorable masterpieces. Quilting is one part of this artistry that has been around for so long and may artist create quilts that live in their families for generations and before the quilting machines, it was done by hand using hand quilting thread.

Choosing the Right Hand Quilting Thread

Quilting can be done by hand or by a machine. Many people love to hand quilt with hand quilting thread because it is more hands on and the feel of the thread in their fingers is very rewarding. With hand quilting the right type of thread has to be chosen in order to work. Hand quilting thread should be made of 100% cotton. Hand Quilting thread comes with a coating on the outside to enable the thread to guide through the fabric with ease. This type of thread has to be strong, sturdy and durable. They are available in several colors. In the case where an individual may want to use a fabric other than cotton to quilt there are other threads made from rayon or polyester that can be used. They can take the thread and coat it with a wax that can be purchased at any craft store and this will allow the thread to move through the material easier.

When quilting by hand one should make sure not to use a thread that is not appropriate for the fabric because it can fray and cause many problems. Next if a quilter is using a sewing machine there is spool thread that is best to use, this thread will not get bunched up in the machine. Machine thread is not at all recommended for hand quilting. Hand quilting with hand quilting thread is a wonderful way to create a quilt with and old fashioned feel to it and it is something that will live on from generation to generation.
