There is still a ton of demand for all of the original Sesame Street cake pans that were created by Wilton from the early 70′s to the mid 90′s. They still currently make a few, but not nearly as many as they used to. The current Sesame Street pans that they make are Elmo’s Face and Abby Cadabby, but all of the original have all been retired. In this post I want to show you what these cake molds are, how much you can expect to spend for them, and where to buy them from.
The most popular of all of the old pans are the Cookie Monster shaped cake pans. There are actually two different pans, the first one is just Cookie with a chef’s hat on. This cake pan was retired way back in 1971, but can still be found for about $15. The second pan is very similar to the first, but he’s holding a present in his hand. Why it’s not a cookie, I don’t know, but it can easily be decorated to look as such. Wilton retired this pan in the mid-90′s.
Along with the current Elmo pan, there is also one that was retired in 1996. It is a full body of him, rather than just his face like the current pan is. If you’re looking to save money over the current pan, you can usually pick this one up for less than $10. It is quite a bit more difficult than the face pan is, though.
All of the Big Bird cake pans have long been retired. There are five different versions of this pan, and the latest was retired in the early 90′s. You’ll either find a pan that is his face, or one that is his entire body. These are all really similar, so there really isn’t any advantages from one to the other. The biggest difference is the price. One of the pans can be found as cheap as $10, and there is another that is a collector’s item that can be as expensive as $60 or $70.
The best place to find these pans is on eBay. They’re difficult to find anywhere else, and they have them all in one place. Spend some time searching between different pans to find the best deal. Also, if you plan on baking this cake and not collecting them, you can save money by finding ones that don’t have the insert and instructions since they are available on Wilton’s website for download.
