The loading and unloading of trucks that pull into building loading docks takes place every day around the country, it’s a fairly standard occurrence. Unfortunately what’s not standard is the size of the trucks and the height of the loading docks. The result is an occasional disparity between the height of the truck bed and the loading dock as well as the distance between the truck bed edge and the lip of the dock.

dock levellerTo compensate for all of these differences and to make it an easy procedure for loading and unloading heavy and bulky objects to and from trucks, devices known as dock levellers have been devised.

A dock leveller bridges the distance between the dock and the truck allowing moving equipment such as a forklift to operate quickly and efficiently. Similarly there are types of levellers that can be positioned to get to items that are not positioned near the rear or edge of the truck. They can be quickly removed from the truck bed by backing the truck underneath the leveller which can then be swung onto the truck and lowered down.

It is possible to install either a manual or a hydraulic dock leveller, depending upon the size you require and the volume of traffic that goes through the dock. A manual leveller may be lowered and raised using a pulley and counterweights as it is hauled into position. A hydraulic system is necessary for not only lowering and raising the bridge but also for those levellers that extend out over the truck. Similarly it may be necessary for a loading dock to contain both types of leveller to handle a range of different transport types and sizes.

The fast and efficient movement of transport through the system is vital for profitable organizations to continue operation and without machines such as dock levellers the system would slow dramatically. Time and money are both maximized by this simple but innovative means of unloading containers.
