When it comes to gas portable grills, it appears that each family seems to have been given one person who is brilliant at this. This works out well, because everyone else in the family is then able to enjoy great barbecue at home. One person recounted his recent experience with a family BBQ genius:

“My family and I flew back to California for a family reunion with my two brothers and sister and all our families.

My younger brother’s a lawyer. He works long hours so when he gets a chance to play he goes all out.

My older brother is a construction contractor. He’s a take charge guy’s, guy. He makes plans, sets deadlines, tells other guys what to do and sees that it’s done. Buy the way, he has all the best toys for guys.

My sister worked in the medical field but retired to raise a family and loved that so much she never went back.

We stayed with my brother the lawyer. He has a beautiful, gigantic house on a golf course. We showed up Friday in time for a late dinner.

After dinner my sister and her husband came by. Finally my older brother showed up in his customized company truck. “Hey, it’s a business expense”, he argues. Perhaps, but we all knew it was just one more toy.

We spent hours catching up and made plans for all four families to get together at our favorite beach to spend Saturday afternoon and evening.

I reflected on what a great time I was having with my brothers, sister, and their wives and husband and the prospect of spending the day together at one of my favorite places in the world.

Before we called it a night, my older brother notified us that he’d do the “take-off list”, show up at 8am, have coffee, then we’d go get grilling supplies. That was manly contractor speak for, get the list and go shopping for groceries and picnic supplies. Of course real men, especially contractors, don’t go grocery shopping with lists from their wives.

When he arrived at 8:00 on the dot, he had folding chairs, folding tables and lots of other supplies.  Most striking to see were a couple of different stainless steel portable gas grills.

As we were setting up later at the beach, I asked about them. I found out they were his pride and joy.

One was a propane fueled, infrared barbecue. It could cook at 14,000 BTUs, several hundred degrees. It had over 200 inches of grill space. He said it would sear the outside of the meat, sealing in all the juices and then finish it to perfection. He wasn’t bragging.

The other grill he boasted, could be used to cook anything, grill it, fry it, even bake bread. It could use propane, charcoal, even electricity.

He spent much of the next several hours proving his skills as a grill chief. His menu was amazing. We had chicken, steaks, burgers, brats and four different kinds of vegetables. He even kept the freshly baked sourdough garlic bread warm.

We all visited until late into the night. It was a wonderful family reunion and a first rate education on the capabilities of the latest in gas grills.”

Perhaps you are meant to become the barbecue genius of your family. All it takes is the right equipment, and some work experience behind the grill, and you’ll be on your way.
