Opiate Addiction Symptoms

There are many opiate addiction symptoms that you can identify, not only in yourself but also in other people who use medications such as Morphine, Oxycodone, Vicodin, Codeine and Percodan. Besides the medication, there are also underground substances like Opium and Heroin which have the same or a higher effect, depending on their level of purity. Opiates derive from the opium poppy and its processed latex, oftenly called Poppy Tears.

Addiction to this kind of drug is unfortunately getting quite common these days as they are highly efficient in reducing pain and alleviating anxiety. The problem is that taking opiates regularly and in a relatively high dosage causes the brain to cease the production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller. Consequently, the user will start consuming in excess, hoping to get rid of which ever pain is bothering them. The body, however, quickly adjusts to the dosage, requiring higher quantities to satisfy their needs.

General symptoms of opiate addiction that are recognizable in dependents are social withdrawal, depression, weight loss, overall unkempt appearance, impaired reflexes, slurred speech, bouts of euphoria and pupil dilation. On a more personal level, you might have an opiate addiction if you relate to symptoms like dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, disorientation, shallow breathing and muscle spasticity.  These are also commonly found as other prescription drug addiction symptoms.

Due to their dependence on the medication, opiate addicts have a hard time finding and keeping a job, as their main focus goes to the drug and they will require to either swallow, snort, smoke or inject time and time again. Sadly, criminal behavior is quite incident within addicts, as they need funds to support their dependency . Fatal respiratory failure is often a consequence of opiate overdose, whereas hot and cold flashes, restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, diarrhea and muscular aches and spasms are a few symptoms of opiate withdrawal.
