Journaling is not just for little girls anymore.  In fact, a journal is much different from a diary.  A diary is typically just a record of events.  If you keep a diary, you write down what happens each day.  A journal can be this and a lot more.  Here are just a few reasons why you should keep a journal, whether your a little girl or not.

Recording your Memories

journalingIf you write down your daily events, you are recording your memories, often good and bad.  Instead of just say, “Today I did this and that…” write about it in greater depth.  How were you feeling and what did certain events mean to you?  It not only makes the writing more enjoyable, but the reading more enjoyable when you decide to go back later and reread it.

Practice your Writing

If you love creative writing, or any writing for that matter, journaling is a great way to practice your craft.  You can write stories, practice dialogues, describe scenes around you, etc.  Practice your weak points and practice your strong points.  Most of all, make sure you enjoy what you are doing and get a lot out of it.

Write to Other People

Have you ever really wanted to say something to someone but couldn’t?  Maybe someone rubbed you the wrong way and you really wanted to tell them off but couldn’t muster up the courage.  Maybe you keep your opinion to yourself a few too many times because you can’t find the right words.  Write down what you would have said and practice what you could say in the future.  Maybe next time the words won’t take so long to come to you.

You can write just about anything you want in your journal.  You could even do more than just writing.  Draw pictures, glue in small items that have special meaning to you.  Take the ideas and run with them.
