In today’s society, the majority of materials we need to drill holes in are glass, tiles and concrete. These materials are a great deal harder than wood and as a result the most suitable drill bit for these materials is the diamond drill bit.
Diamond is an extremely durable material which is regularly used in the industry for drilling holes into hard materials like those mentioned above. Diamond drill bits encompass a tip made of diamond which is either sintered or bonded. To help to reduce the cost of procurement of these drill bits, here is a step by step guide to the use of diamond drill bits.
Diamond drill bits should always be used at low speeds because fast speeds can cause damage and create a great amount of heat. The optimal speed for a diamond drill bit is 700-1000 RPM. The actual speed is dependent upon the overall diameter of the diamond drill bit. For drill bits which measure 6mm in diameter, the maximum speed should be 2000 RPM.
The drill bit should always be kept cool with the use of water. Water will help to keep the drill bit cool while the drilling commences, will remove debris created by drilling and will aid in lubrication. A washing up bottle or any other alternative method for the pouring of water should be used to distribute water directly onto the surface being drilled.
With regards to the action of drilling, the pace should be slow but steady. Commence slowly, tilt the drill bit so that it slightly scrapes the surface and then drill in a vertical fashion. It is advisable to use some type of support mechanism on top of the surface being drilled as this will help to prevent you from slipping and will enable you to gain a stronger hold when using the drill.
Finally, use moderate pressure to drill and subsequently repeat the action of drilling a bit and then take out the drill and enable the water to lubricate.
