Everybody needs pillow cases.  The question is what kind should one buy?  Silk pillow cases make a nice alternative to the standard cotton.  However, if one has never purchased silk pillow cases before, there can be a feeling of being overwhelmed.  Just throwing yourself at the mercy of the salesperson is hardly a good strategy, either.  No matter how well intentioned they may be, it is a little hard to believe everything they say.

So the only real solution is to educate yourself. This article will make an effort to do just that.  Two things to keep in mind when beginning to shop for silk pillow cases are momme and thread count.  They are not the most important thing to look for when shopping for silk pillow cases; that is arguably the feel of the pillowcase.  However, they are things you will encounter, so learning a bit about them could help your shopping experience.

Momme is the unit of measurement used to describe the density of silk.  Determined by weighing a piece of silk 45 inches wide by 100 yards long, the momme will be a number anywhere between 3 or so all the way up to something in the 30s or 40s.  3-5 is what is used to describe gauze which is unusable for a silk pillowcase – it just won’t be strong enough.  The upper limit of the momme weight of silk is reserved for heavier applications, like rugs and wall coverings.  What you are looking for is something in the 16-19 range – lightweight but usable.

Thread count is another number you are likely to encounter.  This simply tells how many threads there are in a square inch of fabric.  A higher number will often result in a finer feeling fabric.  Some manufacturers like to pad their numbers by saying a single strand of yarn using 3 pieces of thread twisted together counts as 3 in the thread count, essentially tripling the real thread count of their fabric.  Anything above 400 is going to be very nice.  Don’t get caught in the trap of paying lot of money for very high thread counts – they may not be accurate.

So now that you have a little more information about some of the numbers involved in shopping for silk pillow cases, go ahead and go to the luxury or designer shops to have a look around.  Some good deals can be had in almost any store.  Only now you might feel less pressured because you have a little more knowledge in your back pocket.
