What you should know about copper sinks

Are you thinking about putting a copper sink in your house? If so, there are some things you should know.

The first thing you should know about copper sinks is that there are several types of copper used in making them. One type of copper that is used is called annealed copper, which is very soft and very malleable. Another type of copper is cold rolled copper. It is manufactured with virgin copper, rather than recycling wire and old copper pipes, and therefore much harder than annealed copper. This is the recommended type of copper for building kitchen sinks, but not so much for bathroom sinks.

When choosing what kind of copper you want for your sink, you should also understand patina and finishes. Copper naturally ages over time, and as it ages, it develops a patina. The color of the patina under normal home use will be a dark caramel color. However, some manufacturers sell finishes that are not natural, which is problematic because they require almost daily maintenance. A natural patina requires about as much maintenance as a stainless steel sink.

You also have to remember that copper sinks are made differently, especially with regards to drain location. Center drains are the most common in copper sinks because they are easy to manufacture. However, the center drain is not convenient because once you put an item in the sink, you will cover the drain and make working in the sink very hard. A rear corner drain is more preferable—look for these instead of a center drain. There are many websites with great information on this subject, so do your research.

And finally, look at warranties and read the fine print. Some sinks have only a one-year warranty while others have a lifetime warranty.
