When And Why Should I Buy Cheap Speakers?
Are you in the market for a pair of speakers? Are you unsure of what kind of speakers you need? If you have spoken to a variety of salespeople at a variety of stores, probably the only thing they have agreed upon is this: stay away from “cheap speakers”. You’ve probably been told that they are a waste of money and won’t perform to your specifications.
If you go into a specialty store, the salesperson is probably an “audiophile”. “Audio” generally means “sound”, and “phile” means “lover of”. They probably have a large collection of music that they like to listen to either quite loudly, and/or want to hear every note from every instrument. They probably have an unrealistic idea of what you need. One rule of thumb: a store with “audio” in it’s name in this case means “expensive”. A discount or department store is where you should head.

Let’s break it down: What kind of music are you interested in hearing? If you want to listen to a pop or easy listening kind of music, you don’t need expensive speakers. If you want to listen to talk radio, for example, cheaper speakers should work just fine. If you want to sing quieter karaoke at home or at a small venue, cheap speakers should satisfy. If you do public speaking in a quiet atmosphere, such as a church or hall, cheap speakers should be sufficient.
When shouldn’t you buy a cheap speaker? Take them out of the box and have a look. If there are any gaps in the joining of one part to another, if the plastic covering the wires aren’t intact, if the contacts for the wires don’t look sturdy, and if you give the speaker a little shake and hear rattling inside, don’t buy them. Cheap, well made speakers will give you good service.
