Owning a basic survival kit is probably not very high on the list of priorities for many people, but it’s a purchase that should not be overlooked. While some might say that survival kits are designed for families or adventurers who take risks and hit the rapids or hike America’s most dangerous trails, and not for the average family. The problem is that individuals who are adventurers are the ones who are most likely to already have survival training, and who are going to have survival kits on hand in case the worst case scenario comes true. It’s families and individuals who don’t have this special training who need these kits the most in an emergency, and are the least likely to have them.
No one plans on being an emergency. Normally you don’t go out for a family drive thinking, “Now everyone be prepared, because we’re going to be run off the road on that mountain pass and need to survive a sudden snow storm.” Even the most paranoid people on earth generally don’t think this way. The point of being prepared for a worst case scenario is knowing that although it’s unlikely, there is always the chance that something bad could happen and you want to be prepared for the worst. This shouldn’t be a new concept, as emergency first aid survival kits are a widely purchased and used item, and no one thinks “paranoid” at having an extra first aid kit.
Besides, who cares what anyone else thinks? You should have a basic survival kit for your home and every vehicle, and one to carry around for any trip. If you end up lost in the wilderness, or injured, or stranded, having the ability to drink clean water, start a fire, and make a shelter will be the difference between life and death, and a survival kit could be the only thing tilting the scales in your favor.
