I absolutely loathe cleaning my gutters. I am afraid of heights so getting up on the ladder alone is enough to send me running for the hills. Once I’m up there, my asthma kicks in because of the mold spores and I have trouble breathing. All in all, it is an unpleasant task. So I pay a service to come out once a year to clean my gutters for me. I have a 2,200 square foot, two-story home and I pay them $200 to complete the job each year. I am getting tired of this yearly expense, so lately I have been thinking about installing a gutter guard system. Gutter guard systems, if they are high quality, can mean that you will never have to pay for gutter and downspout cleaning again.
Even if I purchase one of the more expensive gutter guards out there, I can probably get my gutters protected for somewhere around $800. That might seem like a lot, but really it isn’t. I plan on living in my home for at least the next fifteen years. If I pay to have my gutters cleaning once a year for fifteen years at two hundred dollars each time, I will spend at least $2,500. That assumes that the price of the gutter cleaning does not go up at all over the next fifteen years and that is unlikely. So, you can see that installing the gutter guards now could end up saving me $2,000.
Of course, the gutters will still need to be inspected occasionally to make sure that no clogs are forming and that the gutters are still securely attached to the house and pitched in the proper way. If the gutters are not leveled in such a way as to encourage the running of water to the downspouts, then all the gutter protection in the world isn’t going to empty the gutters for me.
